Why a Fridge Compressor Does Not Start
A clicking sound does not establish that the compressor itself has failed.
A refrigerator may light up and respond to its controls while the compressor remains silent. In another case it clicks every few minutes, hums briefly or runs only after the cabinet has been switched off for a while. These patterns describe an attempted start, a control issue or an overload event—not one definitive failed part.
A compressor start problem is worth investigating promptly because cabinet temperatures can rise long before food looks spoiled. The first priority is food storage safety; the next is determining whether the fault lies with supply voltage, controls, starting components, motor protection or the compressor itself.

Clues worth checking before parts are ordered
Symptoms help narrow the fault, but they do not identify a component on their own. The following differences matter when discussing a repair.
Click, pause, click again
A start device or thermal protection may repeatedly engage and disconnect. Low voltage, poor connections or a locked compressor can produce similar sounds; diagnosis requires measurements rather than sound alone.
Lights work but there is no compressor sound
Lighting circuits can remain live when thermostat, control board, sensors or safety functions are preventing compressor operation. Check whether the unit has been placed in demonstration or holiday mode before assuming a failed motor.
Brief hum followed by a stop
The compressor may be drawing excessive current or losing its start circuit. Repeated attempts can increase heat. This is not a reason to fit a larger fuse or bypass protection.
Starts after being unplugged, then fails later
Thermal conditions or an intermittent component can explain a delayed recurrence. The length of each running period and whether cooling occurs during it are valuable facts for the technician.
A useful sequence for fault-finding
- 01
Establish what the fridge is actually doing. Note temperatures in the fridge and freezer, whether an internal fan runs, the state of the display and how long after power-up the clicking occurs. Record a short video of the sound if practical.
- 02
The technician should assess supply and electrical start conditions, available fault records and the compressor protection circuit with appropriate instruments. A poor capacitor, relay or connection must be separated from a compressor with an internal mechanical or electrical defect.
- 03
Once starting is restored, the refrigerator must be observed under load. A compressor that operates but fails to lower cabinet temperature requires an entirely different cooling diagnosis, including airflow, fans and the sealed system.

Beyond the first visible symptom
Start components versus compressor failure
Some refrigerators use start relays, overload protectors or capacitors; others use inverter-driven compressor assemblies. The available checks depend on the design. Installing an apparently similar generic component without checking specifications can create additional failure.
Supply problems can imitate appliance faults
Extension leads, loose sockets, repeated power interruption and voltage instability can cause difficult starting or electronic resets. A qualified person must assess suspect outlets or circuits rather than the appliance being repeatedly tried on different unsafe connections.
What a correct post-repair check looks like
Normal compressor start is only the beginning. Verify that control cycles behave correctly and that compartments recover towards suitable temperatures. A noisy or overheating motor after a new relay is fitted suggests the original complaint may not be resolved.
Information to send with your enquiry
Share the model label, the time between clicks, whether cooling occurred before the fault and whether it followed a power interruption. Tell us if the freezer is still maintaining temperature, and note any burning smell or warm plug without touching damaged electrical parts.
Deciding whether to repair
A relatively low-cost starting component can justify repair, but a major compressor or sealed-system replacement requires comparing age, cabinet condition, likely life and total repair expense. The diagnosis should distinguish confirmed compressor failure from an assumption based on clicking.
Questions about this problem
Does a clicking fridge always need a new compressor?
No. Controls, start devices, voltage and protection faults can produce clicking. A compressor diagnosis should follow relevant electrical and operating measurements.
Can I keep restarting the fridge until it cools?
Repeated cycling can increase heat and does not fix the cause. Avoid continued attempts when it trips, smells hot or clicks persistently.
Why do the lights still work when the fridge will not cool?
The lighting circuit uses a different part of the appliance control system. Its operation does not prove the compressor is being powered or is healthy.
